The Wars of the End Times; From Armageddon to the Battle with Sufyani

War Drums or a Wake-Up Call?

In a corner of the Middle East, in a land that has witnessed thousands of years of bloody wars, the sound of explosions echoes once again. From Gaza to Lebanon, from the Red Sea to the Strait of Hormuz, from Ukraine to Taiwan, the world seems to have transformed into a vast battlefield. Western media enthusiastically speak of “Armageddon,” and some politicians, pointing to biblical prophecies, see themselves on the threshold of the final battle between good and evil. But are these wars truly the eschatological wars mentioned in Islamic traditions? Is “Armageddon” the same as the “Battle with Sufyani”? And most importantly, what is the duty of a true awaiter amidst this storm of fire and blood?

Armageddon; Biblical Prophecy or Political Project?

The word “Armageddon” is derived from the Hebrew “Har Megiddo,” meaning “Mount Megiddo”—a location in the occupied land of Palestine that the Book of Revelation (chapter 16, verse 16) identifies as the site of the final battle between the forces of good and evil. In Zionist-Christian interpretations, this battle is seen as the final confrontation between “Israel” and its enemies, ultimately leading to the victory of Christ and the establishment of the Kingdom of God.

But the bitter truth is that this distorted interpretation has become a tool to justify the crimes of the Zionist regime. Christian Zionist groups in America, such as “Christians United for Israel,” spend millions of dollars supporting settlement expansion and warmongering in Palestine to, in their view, “prepare the ground for the return of Christ.” This is the very “Armageddon” that played a key role in the warmongering policies of American neoconservatives (such as Paul Wolfowitz and Dick Cheney) in the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sufyani; The Political Antichrist of the End Times

On the other side, Islamic traditions present a far more precise and profound picture of the wars of the end times. The central figure of these wars is a person named “Sufyani.” In Kitab al-Fitan by Nu’aym ibn Hammad and Bihar al-Anwar by Allama Majlisi, Sufyani is introduced as a man from the lineage of Abu Sufyan who emerges from the Levant (Syria and its surroundings), dominates Damascus and then Iraq, sends armies to Hijaz, and finally, his army is swallowed by the earth in the region of “Bayda” (between Mecca and Medina).

Imam Sadiq (AS) states in a narration: “The emergence of Sufyani is among the inevitable signs.” But who is Sufyani? Is he a person or a movement? Many contemporary scholars, considering the narrational evidence, view Sufyani as a symbol of the global arrogance and Zionism that seeks to dominate the Islamic world through military and media power. The Zionist regime, backed by America, is today the clearest embodiment of this movement—a regime that, by slaughtering children and destroying hospitals, has revealed its true face to the world.

Correlating Today’s Wars with Eschatological Traditions

If we look carefully at the traditions, we see that the signs of the end-time wars are being fulfilled one after another today. In a narration from Amir al-Mu’minin (AS) in Nahj al-Balagha, it is stated: “In the end times, a group will fight for worldly gain.” And elsewhere: “Sedition and chaos will abound.”

Let us draw the parallels:

1. The Gaza and Lebanon War: A battle in which the Zionist regime, with full Western support, commits war crimes, while the Axis of Resistance stands against it with all its might. This is the very “battle of truth and falsehood” that traditions say will occur before the advent of Imam Mahdi (AS).

2. The Ukraine-Russia War: A conflict in which America and NATO, by provoking Russia, have ignited the fire of war in the heart of Europe. This war has not only devastated Ukraine but has pushed Europe’s economy to the brink.

3. Tensions in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz: Ansarullah in Yemen, through its attacks on ships linked to the Zionist regime, has challenged global maritime security and shattered America’s prestige in the region.

These are all signs that traditions refer to as the “seditions of the end times.”

The Role of Iran and the Axis of Resistance; The Unknown Soldiers of Imam Mahdi (AS)

Amidst these upheavals, the Islamic Republic of Iran, under the wise leadership of Imam Khamenei (may his shadow endure), is the standard-bearer of resistance against the front of arrogance. Iran has not only defended its own existence but, by supporting the Axis of Resistance—from Palestine to Yemen, from Lebanon to Syria—practically plays the role of “preparing the ground for the Advent.” This is the very “active waiting” that Imam Khomeini (RA) founded.

The Supreme Leader has repeatedly emphasized in his statements: “We await the Advent, but waiting does not mean sitting idle. We must prepare the ground.” And this preparation is exactly what is happening in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Palestine.

Global Peace; A Promise Fulfilled After War

Some might ask: why must there be war for peace to come? The answer lies in the Holy Quran: “And We have already written in the Psalms after the mention that the land will be inherited by My righteous servants” (21:105). That is, the earth will ultimately belong to the righteous servants of God, but this inheritance is not attained without struggle and divine testing. The end-time wars are the final great test of humanity. Those who stand on the side of truth in this test will hold a special place in the Mahdist government of justice. And those who fight on the side of falsehood are doomed to destruction.

The Duty of the Waiters in the Era of End-Time Wars

In conclusion, we must speak plainly: we are living in the midst of the end-time wars. With each passing day, one of the signs of the Advent is fulfilled. But what is our duty? Should we merely be spectators and sit waiting? Never! Imam Mahdi (AS) needs companions who will not abandon the trench of truth in these wars. The Jihad of Clarification (Jihad al-Tabyin) in cyberspace, supporting the Axis of Resistance, strengthening a resistance economy, and raising a waiting generation—these are the duties that rest today on every awaiting Shi’a.

So let us pledge to stand alongside the soldiers of Imam Mahdi (AS) in this historic battle. May we be among his steadfast and victorious companions. O Allah, hasten the reappearance of Your Proof.
