Concept of Occultation
The occultation of Imam Mahdi (AS) means the hidden life of the Imam, who is hidden from sight but is present among the people and aware of their affairs. This belief is one of the definitive principles of Twelver Shi'a.
Minor Occultation (260-329 AH)
The Minor Occultation lasted for 69 years (260-329 AH). During this period, Imam Mahdi (AS) communicated with the Shi'a through four special deputies (ambassadors):
Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Amri
نایب اول (۲۶۰-۲۶۷ ق)
Muhammad ibn Uthman al-Amri
نایب دوم (۲۶۷-۳۰۵ ق)
Husayn ibn Ruh al-Nawbakhti
نایب سوم (۳۰۵-۳۲۶ ق)
Ali ibn Muhammad al-Samari
نایب چهارم (۳۲۶-۳۲۹ ق)
With the death of Ali ibn Muhammad al-Samari in 329 AH, the Minor Occultation ended and the Major Occultation began.
Major Occultation (329 AH until the reappearance)
The Major Occultation began in 329 AH and continues until the reappearance. During this period, general deputyship is established, and the Shi'a must refer to comprehensive jurists (mujtahids) for their religious matters.
Philosophy and Reasons for the Occultation
Divine Test
The occultation is a test to measure the faith and steadfastness of the Shi'a.

Longevity of Imam Mahdi (AS)
Imam Mahdi (AS) was born in 255 AH and is still alive today. His age up to 1446 AH exceeds 1190 years. This long life from the Shi'a perspective is something possible and realized through divine power.
